by Layna Fisher, john michaelrossi, Tony Pennino and Drew Hildebrand
Military Act(ion)s is a night of war-and-security-related one-acts: Layna Fisher's Truncated, Tony Pennino's War Prayers, johnmichael rossi's Operation Ajax and the Country Behind the Curtain and Drew Hildebrand's Swim to Shore.
They are presented by Lawnfish Productions, newFangled theatReR and SUPERWOLF, and encompass plays of many different styles and focuses.
First Division: Precious Resources
Writer, actress, performance artist and documentary filmmaker Layna Fisher revives Truncated, a play that she originally premiered at the Public Theater in 2005. Portraying over twenty characters, Fisher combines vivid storytelling with a surprising sense of humor as she explores Sierra Leone’s troubled past, uncertain future, and this shattered country’s impact on the war on terror.
Since the premiere of this play, Fisher has traveled to Sierra Leone implementing a theatrical and cultural exchange between a New York City public school and the youth of the village of Makali. She also filmed an upcoming documentary about political and electoral processes in the region.
This performance at "The 9.13 Project" will be her first performance of her one-woman show since she embarked on this journey. She will be producing it through her theater company Lawnfish.
Second Division: Vital Interests
Auteur johnmichael rossi of the newFangled theatReR presents Operation Ajax and the Country Behind the Curtain, a performance piece inspired by the definitive journalistic account of the overthrow of the Shah of Iran. Visit www.newfangledtheatrer.org for more information about the company.
Tony Pennino presents a short play loosely inspired by a Mark Twain short story and Abraham Lincoln's State of the Union address in War Prayers, a short piece set in present day New York City and "at the edge of a battlefield anytime," where a U.S. Private, U.S. Sergeant, an enemy soldier and a maniac interact.
Author and veteran naval officer Drew Hildebrand's Swim to Shore is a meditation on our relationship to the sea, and military life while deployed thereon, as told through two young naval officers getting drunk at the Officer's Club in Bahrain. Swim to Shore is presented by SUPERWOLF and directed by Sherri Kronfeld. Visit the SUPERWOLF Facebook page for more information about the company.
